{"id":19049,"date":"2024-01-07T07:08:03","date_gmt":"2024-01-07T01:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19049"},"modified":"2025-04-05T14:56:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T09:26:23","slug":"tapioca-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tapioca-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"Tapioca plant (cassava)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Tapioca plant<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0major horticulture crop cultivated on nearly 3 lakh hectares in Tamil Nadu, producing 60 lakh tonnes of the crop.<\/li>\n<li>It is cultivated\u00a0throughout the tropical world for its tuberous roots, from which cassava flour, breads, tapioca, a laundry starch, and an alcoholic beverage are derived.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Climatic conditions required\n<ul>\n<li>Soil: Any well-drained soil, preferably red lateritic loamy soil.<\/li>\n<li>It thrives best in a tropical, warm, humid climate<\/li>\n<li>Rainfall: Well-distributed rainfall of over 100 cm per annum.<\/li>\n<li>This crop can be cultivated upto an elevation of 1000 m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>All parts of cassava\/tapioca \u2013 leaves, stem, tuber and rind \u2013 contain the compounds called\u00a0cyanogenic glucosides (CNGs), that is, linamarin and lotaustralin which are hydrolysed by endogenous enzyme linamarase to\u00a0acetone cyanohydrin which may break down spontaneously liberating free hydrogen cyanide.<\/li>\n<li>Both acetone cyanohydrin and free cyanide are toxic.<\/li>\n<li>Its leaves contain about 10 times higher amounts of CNGs than roots.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0CNG content of cassava leaves decreases with the increase in the age of the leaves.<\/li>\n<li>The rind contains 10-30 times higher cyanoglucoside content than the edible parts.<\/li>\n<li>Feeding crushed peels or leaves immediately after crushing or without proper drying poses a high risk of\u00a0cyanide poisoning in animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Cyanide?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a rapidly acting, potentially deadly chemical that interferes with the body&#8217;s ability to use oxygen. Cyanide can be a colorless gas or liquid, such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) or cyanogen chloride (CNCl).
