{"id":19101,"date":"2024-01-09T08:30:49","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T03:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19101"},"modified":"2025-04-05T15:17:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T09:47:15","slug":"ncs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ncs\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the National Centre for Seismology (NCS)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About National Centre for Seismology (NCS)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>NCS is the\u00a0nodal agency of the Government\u00a0of India for monitoring of earthquake activity and conducts\u00a0seismological research\u00a0in the country.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is an attached\u00a0office of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MOES). .<\/li>\n<li>The NCS\u00a0monitors earthquake activity\u00a0all across the country through its 24\u00d77 round-the-clock monitoring center for better understanding of earthquake source processes and their effect on the cause of earthquake-safe society.<\/li>\n<li>It consists of\u00a0various divisions:\n<ul>\n<li>Earthquake Monitoring and Services<\/li>\n<li>Earthquake Hazard and Risk Assessments<\/li>\n<li>Geophysical Observation Systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0operates and maintains the NSN, or the\u00a0National Seismological Network. The NSN\u00a0consists of 153 seismological observatories spread across the country.\n<ul>\n<li>NSN is\u00a0capable of recording earthquakes and events\u00a0of magnitude (M)\u22652.5 in and around\u00a0Delhi, M\u22653.0 for the North East (NE) region,\u00a0M\u22653.5 in the peninsular and extra-peninsular areas, and\u00a0M\u22654.0 in border regions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Whenever an earthquake occurs in the country,\u00a0its information\u00a0is immediately disseminated by NCS to a variety of user agencies, including disaster management authorities.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>The NCS shares this information\u00a0via earthquake bulletins within five minutes of an earthquake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is also\u00a0involved in the monitoring of aftershock\u00a0and swarm activity, if occurred, throughout the country.<\/li>\n<li>Another important activity implemented by the NCS\u00a0is microzonation. It is a\u00a0site-specific study\u00a0that provides a more realistic and reliable\u00a0representation of ground motion characteristics.\n<ul>\n<li>It is\u00a0useful in land use and urban planning, as well as in retrofitting of existing buildings.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is an Earthquake?<\/h3>\n<p>An earthquake is the sudden release of strain energy in the Earth\u2019s crust, resulting in waves of shaking that radiate outwards from the earthquake source. When stresses in the crust exceed the strength of the rock, it breaks along lines of weakness, either a pre-existing or new fault plane. The point where an earthquake starts is termed the focus or hypocentre and may be many kilometers deep within the earth.
