


{"id":19109,"date":"2024-12-03T04:58:58","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T23:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19109"},"modified":"2025-04-05T15:20:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T09:50:20","slug":"nhb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/nhb\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the National Housing Bank (NHB)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About National Housing Bank (NHB):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>apex agency<\/strong> established to <strong>promote housing finance companies (HFCs) <\/strong>in India.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is an <strong>All-India Financial Institution (AIFl) wholly owned by<\/strong> the <strong>Government of India (GoI).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>NHB <strong>supervises HFCs<\/strong>, <strong>while regulation of HFCs is with<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-daily-current-affairs\/mains-articles\/reserve-bank-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reserve Bank of India (<strong>RBI<\/strong>)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The National Housing Policy, 1988, envisaged the setting up of NHB as the apex-level institution for housing.<\/li>\n<li>In pursuance of the above, NHB was <strong>set up on July 9, 1988, under <\/strong>the <strong>National Housing Bank Act, 1987.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>RBI contributed<\/strong> the <strong>entire paid-up capital.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>NHB is <strong>wholly owned by the GoIpost the 24 April 2019 notification of RBI<\/strong> i.e. The <strong>entire paid-up capital<\/strong> of NHB is <strong>held by the government.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In terms of the<strong> amendment made to<\/strong> the <strong>National Housing Bank Act<\/strong>, 1987, pursuant to the Union Budget announcements for 2019-20, the <strong>regulatory powers<\/strong> (including registration of HFCs) <strong>of NHB over HFCs were transferred to the RBI<\/strong> with effect from August 9, 2019.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>broad functions<\/strong> of NHB as a part of its objective of building a strong, healthy, cost-effective, and viable Housing Finance System include:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Supervision and grievance redressal<\/strong> regarding HFCs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financing<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Promotion and Development.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The general superintendence, direction, and management of the affairs and business of NHB vest in its Board of Directors.<\/li>\n<li>Head Office: New Delhi<\/li>\n<li><strong>NHB RESIDEX:<\/strong> It is the <strong>country\u2019s first official housing price index (HPI). <\/strong>It captures movements in the prices of residential real estate prices.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are All India Financial Institutions (AIFIs)?<\/h3>\n<p>AIFIs are specialized institutions established to provide long-term finance to various sectors of the economy.
