{"id":19128,"date":"2024-01-09T06:21:22","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T00:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19128"},"modified":"2025-04-05T15:27:43","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T09:57:43","slug":"camptothecin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/camptothecin\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Camptothecin?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Camptothecin<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Camptothecin (CPT) is an important\u00a0anti-cancer drug lead molecule for high-value drugs like Topotecan and Irinotecan.<\/li>\n<li>It is a potent topoisomerase I inhibitor extracted mainly from &#8211;\u00a0Camptotheca acuminata (native to Eastern Asia) and\u00a0Nothapodytes nimmoniana (native to India).<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0majorly produced in the Southeast Asian region, with the plant being largely found only in\u00a0China and India.<\/li>\n<li>However, the conjunction of climate change and extensive deforestation undertaken for CPT extraction has pushed these plants into the\u00a0endangered species category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key facts about Nothapodytes nimmoniana<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0endangered forest plant and disseminated in Sri Lanka, China, South East Asia, Taiwan, North Sumatra, Luzon Philippines and India.<\/li>\n<li>In India, this plant is prevalent to Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala and also found in Assam and Jammu and Kashmir.<\/li>\n<li>It is native to India and especially found in the\u00a0Western Ghats region.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0allopathic medicine is produced using Nathapodytes nimmoniana.<\/li>\n<li>The plant\u00a0contains camptothecin (CPT) which is a renowned anticancer drug.<\/li>\n<li>The CPT is found in many plant species but\u00a0maximum amount of CPT has been reported from N. nimmoniana.<\/li>\n<li>It requires nearly 1,000 tonnes of plant material to extract 1 tonne of CPT.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The International Union for Conservation of Nature has red-listed the plant as in the past decade alone there has been a 20% decline in the plant\u2019s population.<\/li>\n<li>Due to the very good source of CPT, this plant has been explored for its\u00a0Phytochemical, Biotechnological and Pharmacological aspects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Cancer?<\/h3>\n<p>It refers to any one of a large number of diseases characterized by the development of abnormal cells that divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue.
