


{"id":19132,"date":"2024-01-09T06:28:54","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T00:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19132"},"modified":"2025-04-05T15:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T09:59:16","slug":"elasmobranch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/elasmobranch\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Elasmobranch?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Elasmobranch<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The term elasmobranch refers\u00a0to the sharks, rays, and skates.<\/li>\n<li>These animals have a skeleton made of cartilage, rather than bone.<\/li>\n<li>The other subclass of cartilaginous fish,\u00a0the Holocephali, consists of\u00a0Chimaeras \u2013 ratfish (Genus Chimaera) and\u00a0elephantfish (Genus Callorhynchus).<\/li>\n<li>The main differences between these two subclasses are the structure of their gills and how they grow in the embryo.\n<ul>\n<li>Holocephali has\u00a0four gill slits with a gill cover (an operculum), while Elasmobranchs have\u00a0five to seven external gill slits with no gill cover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Characteristics of Elasmobranchs\n<ul>\n<li>Its\u00a0skeleton is made of cartilage rather than bone.<\/li>\n<li>They have five to seven gill openings on each side.<\/li>\n<li>Rigid dorsal fins (and spines if present)<\/li>\n<li>Spiracles to aid in breathing<\/li>\n<li>The upper jaw of elasmobranchs is not fused to their skull.<\/li>\n<li>Elasmobranchs\u00a0have several rows of teeth which are continually replaced.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0don&#8217;t have swim bladders, but instead their large livers are full of oil to provide buoyancy.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0reproduce sexually with internal fertilization and either bear live young or lay eggs.<\/li>\n<li>Elasmobranch skin is made of tiny, hard, tooth-like\u00a0placoid scales called denticles.<\/li>\n<li>These are renowned for their\u00a0highly tuned senses, which make them incredibly successful in their environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Their distribution ranges\u00a0from nearshore regions to the deep oceanic waters.<\/li>\n<li>Some species are known to travel long distances, hence can be considered\u00a0as highly migratory. Their stock can be found in more than one Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0widely distributed in the Oceans but are most diverse in the\u00a0tropical and subtropical IndoPacific Ocean.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is cartilage?<\/h3>\n<p>Cartilage is a strong, flexible connective tissue that protects your joints and bones. It acts as a shock absorber throughout your body.
