{"id":19148,"date":"2024-01-10T07:58:01","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T02:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19148"},"modified":"2025-04-05T15:35:22","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T10:05:22","slug":"eucalyptus-snout-beetle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eucalyptus-snout-beetle\/","title":{"rendered":"Eucalyptus Snout Beetle"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Eucalyptus Snout Beetle<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0leaf-feeding beetle that is a major defoliator of eucalypts.<\/li>\n<li>It is also known as\u00a0eucalyptus weevil.<\/li>\n<li>The pest is\u00a0indigenous to Australia but occurs in many countries throughout the world where eucalypts are grown.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The beetle\u00a0feeds on leaves, buds and shoots, resulting in stunted growth and deflation and causing heavy losses.<\/li>\n<li>It can cause damage over vast areas as it had a great flight capability and gets transferred with transport of forest products.<\/li>\n<li>The pest is mainly controlled with the help\u00a0of microwasps Anaphes spp \u2014 an expensive solution.<\/li>\n<li>This led a team of scientists to look for naturally occurring pathogenic fungi to tackle the problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>New research<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The scientists collected the\u00a0fungi from naturally infected beetles, the pathogen can better adapt to the environmental conditions, making it efficient to control beetles in forest populations.<\/li>\n<li>The findings of the study showed that\u00a0Beauveria bassiana was highly effective both by contact and ingestion, with a mortality rate of 100 per cent.<\/li>\n<li>The fungi could be used\u00a0to develop a bio-pesticide for sustainable forestry using integrated pest management.<\/li>\n<li>The fungi could also be used in other countries where the insect is causing severe damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Fungi?<\/h3>\n<p>They can be single celled or very complex multicellular organisms. They are found in just about any habitat but most live on the land, mainly in soil or on plant material rather than in sea or fresh water.
