{"id":19204,"date":"2024-01-11T02:16:59","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T20:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19204"},"modified":"2025-04-05T15:57:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T10:27:20","slug":"rock-glaciers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rock-glaciers\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Rock glaciers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Rock glaciers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A rock glacier is a\u00a0mass of rock, ice, snow, mud, and water that moves slowly down a mountain under the influence of gravity.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Unlike an ice glacier, rock glaciers usually\u00a0have very little ice visible at the surface.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The rock glacier might consist of a mass of ice covered by rock debris, or it might consist of a mass of rock with interstitial ice.<\/li>\n<li>Formation:\n<ul>\n<li>Rock glaciers typically\u00a0form in mountainous regions where there is a combination of permafrost, rock debris, and ice.<\/li>\n<li>One common scenario involves a pre-existing glacier that accumulates debris and rocks as it moves.<\/li>\n<li>Over time, if the glacier recedes or thaws, the debris-covered ice can transform into a rock glacier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>These are classified\u00a0as \u2018active\u2019 or \u2018relict\u2019 to indicate the status of permafrost within them, identified by the appearance of the rock surfaces.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Impacts\n<ul>\n<li>It increases the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).<\/li>\n<li>It may also\u00a0make landslides more frequent with the land on the melting ice becoming loose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Permafrost ?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a permanently frozen layer on or under Earth&#8217;s surface. It consists of soil, gravel, and sand, usually bound together by ice. Permafrost usually remains at or below 0\u00b0C (32\u00baF) for at least two years.
