Later, the fort was\u00a0captured by the Mewar rulers in 728 CE.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It used to be the\u00a0capital of the Mewar rulers.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0situated on a 180-meter-high hill that rises from the banks of river Berach.<\/li>\n<li>The Fort has been\u00a0witness to several legendary warriors in Indian history, including\u00a0Badal, Gora, Maharana Pratap, Rana Kumbha, Patta, and Jaimal, among others.<\/li>\n<li>It was declared a\u00a0UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>The fort is\u00a0known for its seven gates, namely Padan Gate, Ganesh Gate, Hanuman Gate, Bhairon Gate, Jodla Gate, Lakshman Gate, and the main gate, which is named after Lord Ram.<\/li>\n<li>These gates were\u00a0built to protect the fort from the enemy attacks, and the arches even protect the elephants from entering.<\/li>\n<li>Sprawling across 700 acres and a circumference of 13 km, the fort\u00a0has a kilometre-long road that takes up to the rampart\u00a0after passing through the seven gates.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0walls are made of lime mortar and rise up to 500 metres above ground level.<\/li>\n<li>The fort houses\u00a0four palaces, 19 temples, including Jain and Hindu temples,\u00a020 water bodies,\u00a0and four memorials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Jauhar Mela:\n<ul>\n<li>Every year, a\u00a0Jauhar Mela is held in Chittorgarh.<\/li>\n<li>This Rajput festival celebrates the\u00a0anniversary of one of the jauhars.<\/li>\n<li>Though there\u2019s no specific name given, it is believed that the fair\u00a0commemorates Rani Padmini\u2019s jauhar and celebrates Rajputana valour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is Jauhar?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Jauhar was a\u00a0Hindu tradition practiced by Rajput women who wanted\u00a0to avoid falling into the hands of the enemy.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of consuming poison, they preferred to burn in flames, as fire symbolised purity.<\/li>\n<li>It is said that the practice was\u00a0performed\u00a0only during wars.\u00a0The women did this\u00a0to avoid being enslaved and raped by the invaders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?<\/h3>\n<p>A World Heritage Site (WHS) is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by UNESCO under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972.
