


{"id":19330,"date":"2024-08-01T12:32:26","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T07:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19330"},"modified":"2025-04-05T16:47:45","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T11:17:45","slug":"mahanadi-river-basin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahanadi-river-basin\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Mahanadi River Basin"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Mahanadi River:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the major <strong>east-flowing peninsular rivers<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li>It ranks second to the Godavari River among the peninsular rivers in respect of water potential.<\/li>\n<li>It is considered to be one of the most <strong>active silt-depositing streams<\/strong> in India.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Course:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: The river originates from the <strong>Sihawa range of hills<\/strong> in the Dhamtari district of <strong>Chhattisgarh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It flows in a southeastern direction through <strong>Chhattisgarh and Odisha.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Length<\/strong>: It flows a total of <strong>860 km<\/strong> by distance before it <strong>ends up in the Bay of Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>catchment area<\/strong> of the basin <strong>extends over<\/strong> major parts of <strong>Chhattisgarh<\/strong> and <strong>Odisha<\/strong> and comparatively <strong>smaller portions of Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>passes through<\/strong> several major cities and towns, including <strong>Raipur, Sambalpur, and Cuttack.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Mahanadi basin extends over an area of 141,589 sq.km, which represents 4.3% of the total geographical area of the country.<\/li>\n<li>The river is <strong>bounded<\/strong> in the north <strong>by Central India hills,<\/strong> in the south and east by the <strong>Eastern Ghats,<\/strong> and in the west by the <strong>Maikal hill range.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tributaries<\/strong>: The main tributaries of Mahanadi are the <strong>Seonath River<\/strong>, <strong>Jonk River, HasdeoRiver<\/strong>, <strong>Mand River, Ib River, Ong River,<\/strong> and <strong>Telen River<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hirakud Dam:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Hirakud Dam, the world&#8217;s longest earthen dam (26 km), is constructed across the Mahanadi River, about 15 km from Sambalpur in Odisha.<\/li>\n<li>The dam is used for irrigation, flood control, and power generation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chilika Lake<\/strong>: Chilika, named a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, gets 61% of its inland flow from the Mahanadi River system, mainly from its distributaries &#8211; Daya and Bhargabi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is an earthen dam?<\/h3>\n<p>Earthen dams have been an essential part of human civilization for centuries, providing a reliable water source for agriculture, industry and domestic use.
