{"id":19471,"date":"2024-01-18T09:33:16","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T04:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19471"},"modified":"2025-04-05T17:45:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T12:15:36","slug":"qanat-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/qanat-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Qanat system"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Qanat system<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an ancient\u00a0type of water-supply system, developed and still used in arid regions of the world.<\/li>\n<li>It taps underground mountain water sources trapped in and beneath the upper reaches of alluvial fans and channels the water downhill through a series of gently sloping tunnels.<\/li>\n<li>The qanats have been used for centuries in arid and\u00a0semi-arid parts of north Africa, the Middle East and Asia, where water supplies are limited.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s known by a variety of names, \u201cfoggara\u201d in north Africa, \u201cfalaj\u201d in Oman and \u201cqarez\u201d in parts of Asia.<\/li>\n<li>Many old qan\u0101ts are still used in Iran and Afghanistan, chiefly for irrigation.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s a system that\u2019s managed by everyone and its benefits are shared.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the region\u2019s qanat systems, like those in Iran, are protected under\u00a0heritage status.<\/li>\n<li>Significance of the system\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0qanat is sustainable as it works with gravity and no electricity is needed. It can even be used to create clean energy.<\/li>\n<li>Water lost to\u00a0evaporation is minimal in comparison to surface water supplies.<\/li>\n<li>It can have a wide scale impact. Qanats are multiple kilometres long and once this water hits a floodplain, it can irrigate multiple hectares of land.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0fosters social cohesion. Many people, with different skills, are involved in maintaining the system.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0lifespan of the system extends\u00a0beyond that of a deep water well, which is only about 20 years. Tunnels do not clog as easily as wells.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0quality of water coming from the mountains is much better than water on the plains. It\u2019ll have lower salinity and be better for crops and people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Evaporation?<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0It is the process that changes liquid water to gaseous water (water vapor). Water moves from the Earth&#8217;s surface to the atmosphere via evaporation.
