{"id":19515,"date":"2024-01-19T08:26:21","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T02:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19515"},"modified":"2025-04-05T18:03:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T12:33:44","slug":"soligas-yeravas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/soligas-yeravas\/","title":{"rendered":"Soligas and Yeravas"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Soligas and Yeravas<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Indigenous groups Soligas and Yeravas have been living\u00a0in the Cauvery Basin and the surrounding hills of peninsular India for thousands of years.<\/li>\n<li>Soligas, one of the\u00a0oldest indigenous communities in the country, are the original inhabitants of\u00a0Karnataka and live mostly in the\u00a0Chamarajanagar and Mandya districts.<\/li>\n<li>Honey is an important part of the diet for the Soliga people, who still forage large parts of their food from the biodiversity-rich Ghats.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They reside in the peripheral forest areas near\u00a0Biligiri Rangana Hills and Male Mahadeshwara.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0the first tribal community living inside the\u00a0core area of a tiger reserve in India to get their forest rights officially recognised by a court of law.<\/li>\n<li>Soligas use\u00a0Silver cockscomb as a nutritious leafy green vegetable, as it is high in nutrients such as beta-carotene and folic acids, and has vitamin E, calcium and iron.<\/li>\n<li>Also the scientific community has named a\u00a0new genus (Soliga ecarinata) of wasp after this community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Who are Yeravas?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Yeravas, on the other hand, came to the state from\u00a0Wayanad district in Kerala and settled in\u00a0Kodagu district of the state.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Yeravas use more tubers than Soligas.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Language: They speak their own language of Ravula.<\/li>\n<li>Mushrooms become part of the Yerava diet during monsoons<\/li>\n<li>Issues:\u00a0The food that Soligas and Yeravas depend on for survival is now affected by changes in land use and shifting policies. Worse, traditional knowledge is steadily being lost as young people are migrating out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) Where is the Biligiri Rangan Hills?<\/h3>\n<p>It is located northwest of the Western Ghats and on the westernmost edge of the Eastern Ghats.
