{"id":19556,"date":"2024-01-21T09:14:16","date_gmt":"2024-01-21T03:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19556"},"modified":"2025-04-05T18:19:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T12:49:39","slug":"lamprey-fish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lamprey-fish\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Lamprey Fish?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Lamprey Fish<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Lampreys are\u00a0boneless, jawless fish with\u00a0eel-like bodies that date back over 350 million years.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0belong to a relic (primitive) group of jawless fish\u00a0called Agnathans.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0live in coastal and fresh waters and are\u00a0found in temperate regions around the world,\u00a0except Africa.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Features:\n<ul>\n<li>They range from about 15 to 100 centimetres (6 to 40 inches) long.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Unlike &#8220;bony&#8221; fish like trout, cod, and herring, lampreys\u00a0lack scales, fins, and gill covers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0breathe through a distinctive\u00a0row of seven pairs of tiny gill openings located\u00a0behind their mouths and eyes.<\/li>\n<li>Like sharks, their\u00a0skeletons are made of cartilage.<\/li>\n<li>Lamprey\u2019s\u00a0jawless mouth is a circular, fleshy sucker filled\u00a0with hundreds of\u00a0small teeth and a rasping tongue.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0migratory fish,\u00a0moving between fresh and saltwater to complete their lifecycle.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0spend most of their lives at sea and only move into freshwater to spawn and for their juvenile life stage.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0attach themselves to large animals like fish and whales using their sucker mouth.\u00a0They feed as parasites, rasping into the host\u2019s flesh with their sharp teeth and sucking out blood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are eels?<\/h3>\n<p>Eels are bony fish, easily recognizable because of their snake-like appearance.
