said recently. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Willingdon Island<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>man-made island <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the city of <\/span><b>Kochi, Kerala.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the largest man-made islands in India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island was <\/span><b>created <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>1936 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by <\/span><b>dredging <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>soil from the Vembanad Lake, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is the <\/span><b>largest lake in Kerala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>aim was to create a deep-water port <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that could accommodate large ships and vessels and to improve the trade and commerce of Kochi.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>project <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><b>initiated by Lord Willingdon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>British Viceroy of India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who also<\/span><b> gave his name to the island.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Designed and created<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><b>harbour engineer Sir Robert Bristow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is today a massive commercial centre in Kochi.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from its commercial significance, Willingdon Island also <\/span><b>hosts several important institutions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and facilities.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is headquartered here.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also home to the C<\/span><b>entral Institute of Fisheries Technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Port of Kochi.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The island is <\/span><b>connected to the mainland Kochi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><b>Venduruthy Bridge.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Who was Lord Willingdon (1931 \u2013 1936)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was a British administrator who served in several high offices of the British Empire.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Positions held<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in India:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor of Bombay: 1913\u20131918<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor of Madras: 1919\u20131924<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Viceroy and Governor-General of India: 1931\u20131936<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He served as <\/span><b>22nd Viceroy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Governor-General of India from 1931 to 1936.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Major events during his tenure:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li coincided with the <\/span><b>Civil Disobedience Movement <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">led by Mahatma Gandhi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Gandhi attended the Second Round Table Conference (1931) in London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shortly after Willingdon assumed office.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the failure of the conference, the Civil Disobedience Movement resumed, and the British government adopted a stricter policy toward nationalist leaders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Communal Award (1932),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introduced by British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald, was announced during his tenure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Poona Pact (1932)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between Mahatma Gandhi and B. R.
