{"id":19669,"date":"2024-01-23T01:14:30","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T19:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19669"},"modified":"2025-04-05T19:06:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T13:36:52","slug":"gir-and-kankrej-cattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gir-and-kankrej-cattle\/","title":{"rendered":"Gir and Kankrej cattle"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Kankrej<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also called Wadad or Waged, Wadhiar.<\/li>\n<li>It originated from\u00a0Southeast Rann of Kutch of Gujarat and adjoining Rajasthan (Barmer and Jodhpur district).<\/li>\n<li>Colour of the animal varies from silver-grey to iron-grey or steel black.<\/li>\n<li>It is valued for fast, powerful, draught cattle and also useful in ploughing and carting.<\/li>\n<li>Kankrej, famously known as\u00a0Guzerat in Brazil, is being maintained in large numbers as a pure breed in that country.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key facts about Gir breed<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a famous Indian-born dairy cattle breed.<\/li>\n<li>It is also known as \u201cBhodali\u201d, \u201cDesan\u201d, \u201cGujarati\u201d, \u201cKathiawari\u201d, \u201cSorthi\u201d, and \u201cSurati\u201d.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Its native tract is\u00a0Gir hills and forests of Kathiawar in Gujarat.<\/li>\n<li>It is a world-renowned breed\u00a0known for its tolerance to stress conditions and\u00a0resistance to various tropical diseases.<\/li>\n<li>This breed has been imported by countries like\u00a0Brazil, USA, Venezuela and Mexico.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why from Brazil?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Brazil has preserved the original breed of Gir cows that was gifted by\u00a0the Maharaja of Bhavnagar to Brazil in the 18th century.<\/li>\n<li>Indian cattle like Gir and Kankrej, which\u00a0were exported centuries back, have been suitably modified to yield large quantities of milk in Brazil.<\/li>\n<li>Both countries are working on training and capacity building, including technology transfer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Rashtriya Gokul Mission?<\/h3>\n<p>It has been implemented for the development and conservation of indigenous bovine breeds since December 2014.
