


{"id":19677,"date":"2026-01-07T11:32:34","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T06:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19677"},"modified":"2026-01-07T15:09:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:39:03","slug":"mpemba-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mpemba-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"Mpemba Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Mpemba Effect Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, researchers from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research have used supercomputers to develop the first simulation of ice formation proving the Mpemba effect of water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mpemba Effect<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mpemba effect is a paradoxical phenomenon in which a <\/span><b>hot liquid can cool or freeze faster than a cold liquid <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under certain conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect described by <\/span><b>Aristotle, in his book Meterologica.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is named after <\/span><b>Tanzanian student Erasto Mpemba,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who brought attention to this counterintuitive phenomenon in 1969, making for curious observations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Possible Explanations<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Micro bubbles:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One cause, scientists have posited, is micro bubbles left suspended in water that has been heated by boiling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cavities promote <\/span><b>convection and transfer heat faster<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the water cools.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Evaporation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as warmer water evaporates more, it also takes away some heat (evaporation is inherently endothermic, which is how sweat cools your skin).<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both convection and accelerated heat transfer are enhanced in warmer water because such water is less dense.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Presence of frost in cold water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Frost is an insulator and could <\/span><b>slow the loss of heat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have also considered whether compounds in water like calcium carbonate could be precipitated by boiling, and then dissolve, thus increasing the water\u2019s freezing point.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Recent Findings related to Mpemba Effect<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers also found that the Mpemba effect <\/span><b>is not unique to water.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The simulation demonstrates that <\/span><b>similar behaviour can occur during fluid-to-solid phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transitions in other materials<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2211815&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mpemba Effect is a paradoxical phenomenon in which a hot liquid can cool or freeze faster than a cold liquid under certain conditions.
