{"id":19745,"date":"2024-01-25T02:09:16","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T20:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19745"},"modified":"2025-04-05T19:37:39","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T14:07:39","slug":"wandering-albatrosses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wandering-albatrosses\/","title":{"rendered":"Wandering albatrosses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Wandering albatrosses<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the world\u2019s largest flying bird, with a wingspan reaching an incredible 3.5 metres.<\/li>\n<li>These birds are\u00a0oceanic nomads: they spend most of their 60 years of life at sea and only come to land to breed.<\/li>\n<li>These\u00a0are found almost exclusively in the\u00a0Southern Hemisphere.<\/li>\n<li>Their playground is the vast\u00a0Southern Ocean \u2014 the region between the latitude of 60 degrees south and the continent of Antarctica.<\/li>\n<li>Marion Island and Prince Edward Island together support about half of the entire world\u2019s wandering albatross breeding population.<\/li>\n<li>Habitat:\u00a0They breed on several\u00a0subantarctic islands, which are characterized by peat soils, tussock grass, sedges, mosses, and shrubs.<\/li>\n<li>They are\u00a0monogamous\u00a0and pairs mate for life.<\/li>\n<li>Conservation status\n<ul>\n<li>IUCN: Vulnerable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Threats: The most likely cause is longline fishing, as they become hooked and will drown, as well as the ingestion of plastics, which kills both chicks and adults.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the sub-Antarctic zone?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a region in the Southern Hemisphere, located immediately north of the Antarctic region.
