{"id":19781,"date":"2024-09-19T09:11:01","date_gmt":"2024-09-19T03:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19781"},"modified":"2025-04-05T19:52:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T14:22:23","slug":"houthis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/houthis\/","title":{"rendered":"Who are Houthis?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Houthis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Houthis, officially known as <strong>Ansar Allah (Partisans of God)<\/strong>, are an <strong>Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim military and political movement in Yemen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its <strong>members<\/strong>, who <strong>subscribe to<\/strong> the <strong>minority Zaidi sect of Shiite Islam<\/strong>, <strong>advocate regional autonomy for Zaidis in northern Yemen.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Shiite Muslims are the minority community in the Islamic world, and Zaidis are a minority of Shiites, significantly different in doctrine and beliefs from the Shiites who dominate in Iran, Iraq, and elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>They are a <strong>minority in Yemen<\/strong>, <strong>which is predominantly Sunni Muslim,<\/strong> but they are a significant one, numbering in the hundreds of thousands and making up as much as a third of the overall population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The group <strong>emerged in the 1990s<\/strong> and takes its name from the movement&#8217;s late founder, Hussein al-Houthi.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Houthi <strong>movement began <\/strong>as an effort <strong>to maintain tribal autonomy in northern Yemen<\/strong> and <strong>protest Western influence<\/strong> in the Middle East.<\/li>\n<li>They have been <strong>fighting Yemen\u2019s Sunni-majority government since 2004.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Houthis <strong>took over the Yemeni capital Sanaa in<\/strong> September <strong>2014<\/strong> and seized control over much of north Yemen by 2016. Currently, Houthis <strong>controls<\/strong> approximately <strong>one-third of Yemen\u2019s territory.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Today, the Houthis <strong>seek a greater role in the Yemeni government<\/strong> and continue to advocate for Zaidi minority interests.<\/li>\n<li>The movement is known for its virulently <strong>anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Several of the group\u2019s leaders have been designated as terrorists by the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: Which all countries border Yemen?<\/h3>\n<p>Yemen borders Saudi Arabia in the north and Oman in the east.
