{"id":19929,"date":"2024-01-31T03:35:36","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T22:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19929"},"modified":"2025-04-05T20:53:57","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T15:23:57","slug":"new-kangaroo-lizard-species","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/new-kangaroo-lizard-species\/","title":{"rendered":"New kangaroo lizard species"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About New kangaroo lizard species<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Researchers named the new, scaly reptiles after the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered of Existence (EDGE) program through the Zoological Society of London.<\/li>\n<li>The new species\u00a0Agasthyagama edge or the northern kangaroo lizard belongs to the Agamidae family.<\/li>\n<li>A group of scientists discovered the new species from the\u00a0southern Western Ghats at Kulamavu in Idukki.<\/li>\n<li>The species is\u00a0the second one of the\u00a0Agasthyagama genus after A. beddomii or Indian kangaroo lizard that has been previously reported from Sivagiri hills in Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\n<li>Features\n<ul>\n<li>o A reduced fifth toe makes these reptiles poor climbers and hence do not climb trees like other lizards.<\/li>\n<li>o Instead, they are\u00a0mostly terrestrial and found in areas with dense leaf litter cover.<\/li>\n<li>o They feed on small insects, this variety of kangaroo lizard run fast and hide within dry leaves to evade predators.<\/li>\n<li>o It is known to have a maximum snout-vent length of 4.3 cm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) Where is Western Ghats?<\/h3>\n<p>It is also called Sahyadri, a north\u2013south-running range of mountains in western India. It forms the crest of the western edge of the Deccan plateau parallel to the Malabar Coast of the Arabian Sea.
