{"id":19989,"date":"2024-02-02T04:35:05","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T23:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=19989"},"modified":"2025-04-05T21:17:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T15:47:28","slug":"mesolithic-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mesolithic-period\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Mesolithic Period?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Mesolithic Period<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Mesolithic, also called\u00a0Middle Stone Age, is an\u00a0ancient cultural stage which existed\u00a0between the Paleolithic\u00a0(Old Stone Age)\u00a0and the Neolithic (New Stone Age).<\/li>\n<li>Timeframe: This period is generally considered to have occurred between\u00a0approximately 12,000-10,000 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the defining characteristics of the Mesolithic Age are as follows:\n<ul>\n<li>People\u00a0transitioned from using\u00a0large chipped stone tools\u00a0to\u00a0using smaller chipped stone tools (microliths).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Microliths were probably stuck onto handles of bone or wood to make\u00a0tools such as\u00a0saws and sickles.<\/li>\n<li>At the same time, older varieties of tools continued to be in use.\n<ul>\n<li>People\u00a0transitioned from hunting large herds\u00a0animals in groups\u00a0to a more hunter-gatherer lifestyle.<\/li>\n<li>Towards the end of the Mesolithic Age,\u00a0people began growing crops\u00a0and practising\u00a0animal husbandry, which is the controlled cultivation, management, and production of domestic animals.<\/li>\n<li>It was during the Mesolithic Age that the\u00a0dog was domesticated.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0permanent settlements in the Mesolithic Age\u00a0varied from villages of huts to walled cities.<\/li>\n<li>During the Mesolithic Age, the\u00a0climate was warming after the last ice age, which occurred at the end of the Palaeolithic period.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The art created in the Mesolithic Age is\u00a0highly reflective of the change in climate\u00a0that was happening at the time.<\/li>\n<li>During the Mesolithic period,\u00a0humans developed cave paintings, engravings,\u00a0and ceramics to reflect their daily lives.<\/li>\n<li>In certain areas of the world,\u00a0a range of pottery was made during the Mesolithic Age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mesolithic Sites in India:\u00a0Bagor\u00a0in Rajasthan,\u00a0Sarai Nahar Rai in Allahabad, Jharkhand,\u00a0Chhota Nagpur plateau. In Orissa\u00a0Mayarbbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundugarh are major Mesolithic sites in India. In south India,\u00a0Godavari bases are rich in microliths.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Paleolithic Period?<\/h3>\n<p>It was the period ranging from 2.6 million years ago to 10,000 years ago. The name Paleolithic was coined by the famous archeologist John Lubbock in the year 1865.
