This <strong>group also contains dugongs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dugongs and manatees<\/strong> are very <strong>similar in appearance<\/strong> and behavior, but there is one key difference: their tails.\n<ul>\n<li>Manatees have paddle-shaped tails, and dugongs have fluked tails, giving them a whale-like appearance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat<\/strong>: Manatees inhabit <strong>shallow, marshy coastal areas and rivers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>three species<\/strong>, or types, of manatee.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Amazonian manatee<\/strong> lives in the Amazon River and in fresh water in South America. This species is only found in freshwater.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>African manatee<\/strong> lives in tropical West Africa.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Caribbean manatee<\/strong> is found in Florida and the West Indies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Adult manatees may reach a length of 15 feet (4.6 meters) and a weight of 1,660 kilograms.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dull gray, blackish, or brown<\/strong> in colour, all three manatee species have stout tapered bodies ending in a flat rounded tail used for forward propulsion.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>forelimbs are modified into flippers<\/strong>; there are no hind limbs.<\/li>\n<li>In order <strong>to breathe, <\/strong>they must <strong>swim to the water\u2019s surface<\/strong> for air.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Lifespan: 50 to 60 years<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>herbivores<\/strong>. They graze along the seabed and <strong>eat seagrasses<\/strong>, giving them the <strong>nickname \u201csea cow\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They spend up to <strong>eight hours a day grazing<\/strong> and can consume 4 to 9 percent of their body weight in aquatic vegetation daily.<\/li>\n<li>Apart from mothers and their young, or males following a receptive female, manatees are <strong>generally solitary <\/strong>animals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation Status<\/strong>: All three manatee species are listed as \u2018<strong>Vulnerable\u2019<\/strong> by the IUCN\u2019s Red List of Threatened Species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are Dugongs?<\/h3>\n<p>Dugong marine mammal that inhabits the warm coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, feeds on seagrasses, and is similar to the manatee.
