


{"id":20069,"date":"2024-02-04T03:16:13","date_gmt":"2024-02-03T21:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20069"},"modified":"2025-04-05T22:11:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T16:41:40","slug":"what-are-atmospheric-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-are-atmospheric-rivers\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Atmospheric Rivers?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Atmospheric Rivers:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Atmospheric rivers are <strong>long, concentrated regions in the atmosphere<\/strong> that <strong>transport moist air from<\/strong> the <strong>tropics to higher latitudes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>responsible for 90 percent<\/strong> of the <strong>movement of moisture from the tropics<\/strong> toward the poles.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They are the <strong>largest transport mechanisms of freshwater<\/strong> on Earth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They form when large-scale weather patterns align to create narrow channels, or filaments, of intense moisture transport.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ten or more atmosphericrivers<\/strong> can be <strong>happening at once<\/strong> across the globe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A well-known<\/strong> and strong one <strong>is the Pineapple Express<\/strong>, <strong>with moisture transported from<\/strong> the tropical Pacific around <strong>Hawaii to the US<\/strong> and Canadian West Coasts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o Typically,<strong>250 to 375 miles wide<\/strong>, atmospheric rivers <strong>can stretch more than a thousand miles<\/strong> long.<\/p>\n<p>o They are <strong>more frequent on the East Coast<\/strong> than they are on the West Coast.<\/p>\n<p>o They <strong>primarily occur during the winter of the respective hemisphere,<\/strong> when extratropical cyclones are most prevalent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>o The <strong>average atmospheric river carries<\/strong> an amount of <strong>water vapor<\/strong> roughly <strong>equivalent to the<\/strong> average <strong>flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River<\/strong> (second-longest river in North America).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When atmospheric rivers <strong>run up against mountains<\/strong> or run into local atmospheric dynamics and are <strong>forced to ascend<\/strong>, the <strong>moisture they carry cools and condenses<\/strong>, so they can <strong>produce intense rainfall or snowfall<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>While they are an incredibly <strong>important source of rainfall<\/strong>, they can <strong>also bring flashflooding, mudslides, and landslides<\/strong>, sometimes killing people and destroying property.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00b7 When atmospheric rivers pass over land, they <strong>can cause conditions similar to<\/strong> those of <strong>hurricanes<\/strong> with intense and rapid rainfall, <strong>cyclone-force winds<\/strong>, and significantly <strong>increased wave heights.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are Tropics?<\/h3>\n<p>The Tropics are a region of the Earth, roughly defined as the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature.
