genetic process which could unlock new ways to treat mysterious and deadly Candida auris.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Candida auris<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>fungal pathogen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is <\/span><b>often multi-drug-resistant.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pathogen can<strong> l<\/strong><\/span><b>ive on the skin, inside the human body <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(e.g. in the gut), or <\/span><b>in the environment.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is capable of<\/span><b> causing invasive infections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the human body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. auris causes<\/span><b> serious infections such as bloodstream infections, meningitis, bone infections, burns\/wound infections, and urinary tract infections.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was first identified in Japan in 2009.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How is it contracted?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Most cases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the fungus have been <\/span><b>reported in healthcare settings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as hospitals and nursing homes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is generally thought to be <\/span><b>spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or by person-to-person transmission.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are already suffering from other medical conditions, recent hospital stays, and invasive devices are most at risk of contracting the fungus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How does the fungus act on the body?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are<\/span><b> two ways <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C. auris can affect the body,<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fungus can <\/span><b>either live on a specific region, such as the skin, rectum<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or mouth, in a process<\/span><b> called \u201casymptomatic colonization,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d where a <\/span><b>patient has no symptoms but can spread it to other people.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can enter the bloodstream or wounds, where it can cause severe invasive infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Symptoms:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its symptoms are often similar to those of other common diseases, and hence <\/span><b>diagnosis is difficult.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><b>common symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of C. auris include <\/span><b>fever and chills that don\u2019t go away after treatment with antibiotics.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Mortality Rate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is estimated to be between <\/span><b>30-60%.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Most C. auris infections are treatable with antifungal drugs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called echinocandins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, s<\/span><b>ome C. auris infections are resistant <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the main types of antifungal medications, making them more<\/span><b> difficult to treat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this situation, multiple antifungals at high doses may be required to treat the infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a
