{"id":20168,"date":"2024-02-06T09:39:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-06T04:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20168"},"modified":"2025-04-05T22:50:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T17:20:25","slug":"aldabra-giant-tortoise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/aldabra-giant-tortoise\/","title":{"rendered":"Aldabra giant tortoise"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Aldabra giant tortoise:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the second-largest <strong>species of land tortoise<\/strong> in the world, after the Galapagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra).<\/li>\n<li>It can live for 100 years and has a fascinating history.<\/li>\n<li>This tortoise evolved from the ancestors of <strong>Aldabrachelys abrupta<\/strong>, one of two giant tortoises that inhabited Madagascar for 15 million years.<\/li>\n<li>Four million years ago, the Aldabrachelys abrupta lineage migrated, likely via a combination of drifting with floating vegetation and assisted by their natural buoyancy and good swimming abilities, to the Seychelles.<\/li>\n<li>These are endemic to the <strong>Aldabra Atoll<\/strong> of the Seychelles, an archipelago nation in the western Indian Ocean about 930 miles east of Africa and northeast of Madagascar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o Theseare terrestrial and occur in a wide <strong>variety of habitats<\/strong>, including scrub forests, mangrove swamps, and coastal dunes and beaches, each with their respective vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>o The largest populations of tortoises are found on grasslands called &#8220;<strong>platins.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o Due to prolonged periods of heavy grazing, a habitat known as <strong>\u201ctortoise turf\u201d,<\/strong> consisting of a variety of grasses, has developed in certain areas.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Conservation status<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o <strong>IUCN: Vulnerable<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>o <strong>CITES: <\/strong>Appendix II\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0Q1:What is an atoll?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets.
