climate change (MoEFCC) recently tasked Almora\u2019s GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (GBPNIHE) with coordinating activities of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>intergovernmental knowledge and learning centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> working on behalf of the people of the <\/span><b>Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was formally <\/span><b>established <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and inaugurated on 5 December <\/span><b>1983<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>based <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>Kathmandu, Nepal.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works in and for its <\/span><b>eight regional member countries (RMCs) of HKH<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A<\/span><b>fghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Mission<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><b> Build and share knowledge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>drives regional policy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and action and <\/span><b>attracts investment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that enables the diverse countries and communities of the HKH to <\/span><b>transition to greener, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more inclusive, and <\/span><b>climate-resilient development.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globalization and climate change have an increasing influence on the stability of fragile mountain ecosystems and the livelihoods of mountain people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICIMOD aims to <\/span><b>assist mountain people <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to understand these changes, <\/span><b>adapt <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to them, and make the most of new opportunities, while <\/span><b>addressing upstream-downstream issues.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>supports regional transboundary programmes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through partnerships with regional partner institutions, facilitates the <\/span><b>exchange of experience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and serves as a regional knowledge hub.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also strengthens networking among regional and global centres of excellence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Facts about Hindu Kush Himalaya\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a vast mountain region that<\/span><b> extends 3500 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over <\/span><b>eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It forms the <\/span><b>largest area of permanent ice cover outside<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the<\/span><b> North and South Poles <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and is home to<\/span><b> 4 global biodiversity hotspots.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the s<\/span><b>ource of ten large Asian river system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s: the <\/span><b>Amu Darya, Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/key-facts-about-mekong-river\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mekong<\/a>, Yangtse, Yellow River, and Tarim.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
