{"id":20193,"date":"2024-02-07T12:59:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T07:29:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20193"},"modified":"2025-04-05T23:00:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T17:30:03","slug":"indias-first-hypervelocity-expansion-tunnel-test-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indias-first-hypervelocity-expansion-tunnel-test-facility\/","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s first Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About India\u2019s first Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>S2, nicknamed &#8216;Jigarthanda&#8217;<\/strong>, is a <strong>24-meter-long facility located at IIT Kanpur\u2019s Hypersonic Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory<\/strong> (HEAL) within the Department of Aerospace Engineering.<\/li>\n<li>It is India\u2019s first Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel Test Facility.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>indigenously designed and developed<\/strong> over three years <strong>with funding and support from<\/strong> the <strong>Aeronautical Research and Development Board (ARDB),<\/strong> the Department of Science and Technology <strong>(DST), and IIT Kanpur.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>capable of generating flight speeds between 3-10 km\/s<\/strong>, <strong>simulating the hypersonic conditions <\/strong>encountered during the atmospheric entry of vehicles, asteroid entry, scramjet flights, and ballistic missiles.<\/li>\n<li>It will be a <strong>critical asset for<\/strong> the Indian Space Research Organisation (<strong>ISRO<\/strong>) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (<strong>DRDO<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>It will serve as a <strong>testing ground for ongoing missions<\/strong> of ISRO and DRDO <strong>like Gaganyaan, Reusable Launch Vehicles (RLV), and hypersonic cruise missiles<\/strong>, enabling the development of more advanced and reliable aerospace technologies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the Aeronautical Research and Development Board (ARDB)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is the national body for coordinating and funding futuristic research\/development programmes in Aeronautics. AR&amp;DB was the consequence of the Subramanian Committee report and was constituted by the Government of India in 1971.
