Raman,\u00a0with\u00a0funds\u00a0from private sources.\n<ul>\n<li>Sir\u00a0C.V. Raman served as its director, carrying on his personal research\u00a0until his demise in 1970.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0restructured in 1972\u00a0to\u00a0become an aided autonomous institute receiving funds from\u00a0the\u00a0Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Governing Council is the executive body of the Institute and conducts the administration and management of the Institute.<\/li>\n<li>Today, the\u00a0main areas of research at the Institute are\u00a0Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics,\u00a0Light &amp; Matter Physics,\u00a0Soft Condensed Matter, and\u00a0Theoretical Physics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are ultracold atoms?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0atoms\u00a0whose temperatures are near absolute zero (zero Kelvin) are known as ultracold atoms.<\/li>\n<li>At low temperatures near absolute zero, atoms behave according to the principles of quantum mechanics rather than classical physics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Facts about Quantum Mechanics<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Quantum mechanics is the\u00a0science dealing with the\u00a0behaviour of matter and light\u00a0on the atomic and subatomic scales.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0explains how extremely small objects\u00a0simultaneously have the\u00a0characteristics of both\u00a0particles (tiny pieces of matter)\u00a0and waves (a disturbance or variation that transfers energy). Physicists call this the \u201cwave-particle duality.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>It attempts to\u00a0describe and account for the properties of molecules and atoms and their constituents\u2014electrons, protons, neutrons, and other more esoteric particles such as quarks and gluons.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>These properties include the interactions of the particles with one another and with electromagnetic radiation (i.e., light, X-rays, and gamma rays).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Astrophysics?<\/h3>\n<p>Astrophysics is a branch of space science that applies the laws of physics and chemistry to seek to understand the universe and our place in it.
