{"id":20267,"date":"2026-10-09T13:46:01","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20267"},"modified":"2026-10-09T15:45:30","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T10:15:30","slug":"gomti-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gomti-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Gomti River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Gomti River Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rising level of water in the Gomti River in Lucknow has triggered a flood-like situation in parts of the city recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Gomti River<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> tributary of the Ganges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ganga) River, <\/span><b>flowing entirely<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the state of <\/span><b>Uttar Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river is also known by the names <\/span><b>Gumti or Gomati.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Course<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>originates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from<\/span><b> Gomath Tal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Fulhar Jheel) near the town of Madho Tanda in the Pilibhit district which <\/span><b>lies within the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here, the river travels a distance of about<\/span><b> 940 kilometers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before it<\/span><b> merges with the Ganga River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Saidpur\/Kaithi in Ghazipur district.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>entire Gomti basin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is underlain by <\/span><b>thick alluvial sediments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the <\/span><b>Quaternary age.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alluvial sediments consist of boulders, pebbles, gravel, sand, silt, clay, and kankars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unconsolidated unit may be further subdivided into younger alluvium and older alluvium.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The younger alluvium occupies the present-day flood plains, while the older group occupies elevated portions, mainly the doab portions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The older alluvium is characterized by kankar nodules at depth otherwise it is similar to the younger alluvium.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> perennial river. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river is characterised by <\/span><b>sluggish flow throughout the year, except during the monsoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> season, when heavy rainfall causes a manifold increase in the runoff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Major Tributaries: Sai River, Chowka River, Kathina River, and Saryu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> River.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are various <\/span><b>cities that<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are situated on the banks of River Gomti, such as <\/span><b>Sultanpur, Lucknow, Jaunpur, and Lakhimpur Kheri.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, Gomti has become <\/span><b>one of the most polluted rivers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Uttar Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/video-gomti-river-swells-floodwater-reaches-lucknow-phoenix-palassio-mall-ekana-stadium-12155632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><b>NDTV<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gomti River is a tributary of the Ganges (Ganga) River, flowing entirely through the state of Uttar Pradesh.
