


{"id":20331,"date":"2024-02-10T05:24:34","date_gmt":"2024-02-09T23:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20331"},"modified":"2025-04-06T00:38:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T19:08:00","slug":"aai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/aai\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Airports Authority of India (AAI)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Airports Authority of India (AAI)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0statutory body under the\u00a0Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.<\/li>\n<li>It was constituted by an Act of Parliament and came into being on 1st April, 1995, by merging the erstwhile National Airports Authority and the International Airports Authority of India.<\/li>\n<li>The merger brought into existence a single Organization entrusted with the\u00a0responsibility of creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure both\u00a0on the ground and air space in the country.<\/li>\n<li>AAI\u00a0manages 137 airports,\u00a0which\u00a0include\u00a024\u00a0International Airports (including 3 International Civil Enclaves), 10\u00a0Customs Airports (including 4 Customs Civil Enclaves), 80\u00a0Domestic Airports, and 23\u00a0Domestic Civil Enclaves at Defence airfields.<\/li>\n<li>AAI also\u00a0provides Air Traffic Management Services (ATMS)\u00a0over the entire Indian Air Space\u00a0and adjoining oceanic areas, with ground installations at all airports, and 25 other locations to ensure the safety of aircraft operations.<\/li>\n<li>The functions of AAI are as follows:\n<ul>\n<li>Design,\u00a0development, operation and maintenance of international and domestic\u00a0airports\u00a0and civil enclaves.<\/li>\n<li>Control and management of the Indian airspace\u00a0extending beyond the\u00a0territorial limits of the country,\u00a0as accepted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).<\/li>\n<li>Construction, modification and\u00a0management of passenger terminals.<\/li>\n<li>Development and\u00a0Management of cargo terminals at international and domestic airports.<\/li>\n<li>Provision of passenger facilities and an information system at the passenger terminals at airports.<\/li>\n<li>Expansion and strengthening of the operation area, viz. Runways, Aprons, Taxiway etc.<\/li>\n<li>Provision of visual aids.<\/li>\n<li>Provision of communication and navigation aids, viz. ILS, DVOR, DME, Radar etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)?<\/h3>\n<p>ICAO is an intergovernmental specialized agency associated with the United Nations (UN). It was established in 1947 by the Convention on International Civil Aviation (1944) known as Chicago Convention.CAO is dedicated to developing safe and efficient international air transport for peaceful purposes and ensuring a reasonable opportunity for every state to operate international airlines. It sets standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security and facilitation, efficiency, and economic development of air transport as well as to improve the environmental performance of aviation.
