{"id":20348,"date":"2024-02-11T02:37:55","date_gmt":"2024-02-10T21:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20348"},"modified":"2025-04-06T00:43:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T19:13:56","slug":"aral-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/aral-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"Aral Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Aral Sea<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It stands at the boundary between\u00a0Kazakhstan to the north and Uzbekistan to the south.<\/li>\n<li>It was once a large saltwater lake of Central Asia and the world\u2019s fourth largest body of inland water.<\/li>\n<li>The remnants of it nestle in the climatically inhospitable heart of Central Asia, to the\u00a0east of the Caspian Sea.<\/li>\n<li>The Aral Sea depression was formed toward the end of the\u00a0Neogene Period (which lasted from about 23 to 2.6 million years ago).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It was made by waters from the\u00a0Syr Darya and the\u00a0Amu Darya rivers that were dependent on glacial melt.<\/li>\n<li>It drains\u00a0Uzbekistan and portions of\u00a0Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kyrgyzstan.<\/li>\n<li>Climate: The Aral Sea is located within the harsh climate region of Central Asia. The area experiences\u00a0a desert-continental climate, characterized by hot summers, cold winters, and varying diurnal air temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Reason for its disappearance<\/li>\n<li>According to the space agency, in 1960 the Soviet Union undertook a major water diversion project where they diverted the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya rivers for irrigation projects.<\/li>\n<li>Though the project made the desert region surrounding the sea bloom, it had a devastating impact on the Aral Sea.<\/li>\n<li>The waterbody slowly started drying up and today it is on the verge of complete disappearance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Evaporation?<\/h3>\n<p>Evaporation is the process by which a liquid turns into a gas.
