It\u00a0gets its name from the swollen lymph nodes (buboes) caused by the disease.\n<ul>\n<li>Called the Black Death, it\u00a0killed millions\u00a0of Europeans\u00a0during the Middle Ages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The other types of plague are:\n<ul>\n<li>Septicemic plague, which happens when the\u00a0infection goes all through the body.<\/li>\n<li>Pneumonic plague, which happens when the\u00a0lungs are infected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Plague can be a very severe disease in people, with\u00a0a case-fatality ratio of 30% to 60%\u00a0for the bubonic type, and is always\u00a0fatal for the pneumonic kind\u00a0when left untreated.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms: Bubonic plague symptoms include\n<ul>\n<li>Sudden\u00a0high fever and chills.<\/li>\n<li>Pains in the areas of the abdomen, arms, and legs.<\/li>\n<li>Headaches.<\/li>\n<li>Large and\u00a0swollen lumps in the lymph nodes (buboes) that develop and leak pus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Transmission:\n<ul>\n<li>Y. pestis is spread mostly by fleas on rodents and other animals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is transmitted between animals and humans\u00a0by the bite of infected fleas, direct contact with infected tissues, and\u00a0inhalation of infected respiratory droplets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0incubation period of bubonic plague\u00a0is usually 2 to 8 days.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Treatment:\n<ul>\n<li>It can be treated and cured with\u00a0antibiotics.<\/li>\n<li>Antibiotics that treat bubonic plague\u00a0include Ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin,\u00a0moxifloxacin, Gentamicin and Doxycycline.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0can be fatal if it\u2019s not treated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are antibiotics?<\/h3>\n<p>Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacterial infections in people and animals.
