{"id":20475,"date":"2024-02-14T03:05:56","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T21:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20475"},"modified":"2025-04-06T01:34:20","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T20:04:20","slug":"cuscuta-dodder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cuscuta-dodder\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuscuta dodder"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Cuscuta dodder<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is native to\u00a0North America.<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0parasitic vine without roots, has already infested acres of trees in the reserve forests and has begun to spread inside India\u2019s oldest bird sanctuary.<\/li>\n<li>It is found that plants covering the canopy of Barringtonia trees, which are preferred by migratory water birds for nesting.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0holoparasitic plant builds a canopy on the host plant and casts thousands of tendrils to form a dense spectacle before it strangles and eventually kills it.<\/li>\n<li>As per a technical paper published by the National Research Centre for Weed Science, in India, Cuscuta poses a serious\u00a0problem in oilseeds, pulses and fodder crops in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Orissa, West Bengal and parts of Madhya Pradesh under\u00a0rain fed as well as irrigated conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Legislation in 25 countries has listed the dodder as a \u2018declared noxious weed\u2019 with seeds and plant material denied entrance. In United States, it is the only weed seed whose movement is prohibited in every state.<\/li>\n<li>The seeds of Cuscuta are spheroid and have a hard, coat, which aids them to\u00a0survive up to 50 years in dry storage and at least 10 years in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike root parasites, Cuscuta seeds\u00a0do not require a specific\u00a0stimulant to induce germination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Holoparasitic plants?<\/h3>\n<p>\u00a0These plants are wholly dependent on host plants to survive, tapping into their xylem and phloem, gaining access to water, minerals, and other organic products.
