of Chairpersons of Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunals and Presiding Officers of Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs) in New Delhi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Debt Recovery Tribunals<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRTs are <\/span><b>quasi-judicial bodies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> established under the <\/span><b>Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Role:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Their primary role is <\/span><b>adjudicating debt recovery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disputes related to <\/span><b>banks and financial institutions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRTs handle loan default <\/span><b>cases above \u20b920 lakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, focusing on secured debts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DRTs also <\/span><b>hear Securitisation Applications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SAs) filed under the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sarfaesi-act-2002\/\" target=\"_blank\">SARFAESI Act<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2002 by borrowers or aggrieved parties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are currently <\/span><b>39 DRTs functioning across India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each headed by a Presiding Officer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Composition<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A DRT is presided over by a <\/span><b>judicial officer<\/b> <b>qualified to be a District Judge.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also <\/span><b>have administrative and technical members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appointed by the Central Government.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Powers of DRTs<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summon and examine witnesses,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compel the production of documents,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive evidence on affidavits,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review or dismiss applications,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conduct ex parte proceedings,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issue commissions for document and witness examination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jurisdiction of DRTs:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Each DRT has a <\/span><b>territorial jurisdiction defined by the Central Government.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurisdiction is limited to cases involving debt recovery by banks and financial
