{"id":20664,"date":"2024-02-20T05:56:58","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T00:26:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20664"},"modified":"2025-04-06T02:49:21","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T21:19:21","slug":"anoxicmarine-basins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/anoxicmarine-basins\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Anoxic Marine Basins?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Anoxic Marine Basins<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>An anoxic basin is a\u00a0body of water without oxygen.<\/li>\n<li>Permanent anoxic basins\u00a0form when there is a strong layering of the water column created\u00a0in a cup-like formation\u00a0on the ocean floor.\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0layering is caused by density differences due to salt concentration or temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Once stratification occurs,\u00a0circulation with the rest of the ocean is minimized, and\u00a0microorganisms consume the oxygen in the water.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In most anoxic basins, the\u00a0water is extremely stagnant and can have mixing times of many thousand years.<\/li>\n<li>They range from a few hundred meters to\u00a0several kilometers across and from 10 meters to 500 meters\u00a0deeper than the surrounding seafloor.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0can\u2019t support animal life, and are\u00a0populated primarily by microbes and some very\u00a0specialized fungi with different metabolisms than creatures in oxygen-rich environments.\n<ul>\n<li>Some of them\u00a0rely on molecules such as nitrate for respiration, and\u00a0some get their carbon from gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) instead of eating other organisms or particles of organic matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Many anoxic basins also contain toxic chemicals, which are\u00a0produced by geothermal activity or by microbes living in the basins.<\/li>\n<li>Some\u00a0also contain salt domes, big mounds of hardened salt.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In some anoxic basins,\u00a0methane and other gases collect in reservoirs beneath the seafloor.\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0gases can percolate upward,\u00a0pushing up domes of sediment\u00a0on the seafloor that are\u00a0called mud volcanoes.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0gases can burst through\u00a0the soft sediments,\u00a0creating &#8220;mini-eruptions&#8221;\u00a0of wispy columns of\u00a0sediment-filled water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is carbon sequestration?<\/h3>\n<p>Carbon sequestration is the capturing, removal and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the earth\u2019s atmosphere.
