


{"id":20763,"date":"2024-02-22T04:50:07","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T23:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20763"},"modified":"2025-04-06T07:32:30","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T02:02:30","slug":"paruveta-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/paruveta-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Paruveta Festival?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Paruveta Festival<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The festival, also known as the \u2018mock hunting festival\u2019, is celebrated at the\u00a0Sri Narasimha Swamy temple in the town of\u00a0Ahobilam, Andhra Pradesh.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0celebrated by all sections of people, irrespective of their caste.<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0festival of communal hormony, as\u00a0devotees from other religious communities like muslims\u00a0also offer prayers to the Lord.<\/li>\n<li>Origin:\n<ul>\n<li>According to folklore,\u00a0Lord Vishnu,\u00a0upon his incarnation as a man-lion (Narasimha) in Ahobilam,\u00a0married Maha Lakshmi,\u00a0born as a tribal girl Chenchulakshmi.<\/li>\n<li>The Kurnool District Gazetteers, published by Government Press in 1881, record several beliefs of the\u00a0Chenchu tribes, including their\u00a0reverence for Ahobila Narasimha as their brother-in-law and\u00a0inviting him home for Makara Sankranti.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>While Paruveta rituals are commonly\u00a0observed in many temples during Vijayadasami or Sankranti,\u00a0at Ahobilam, it is conducted for a \u2018mandala\u2019 (forty days).<\/li>\n<li>Activities:\n<ul>\n<li>During the festival,\u00a0the deity from the temple&#8217;s inner sanctum\u00a0is taken to the 32 Chenchu tribal villages surrounding Ahobilam town\u00a0for a duration of 40 days.<\/li>\n<li>The spiritual sojourn\u00a0starts with the tribals aiming their bow\u00a0and shooting two arrows at the palanquin, not only as a\u00a0mark of reverence\u00a0but also to show that the\u00a0deity is under their protective cover.<\/li>\n<li>Chenchus take \u2018Narasimha Deeksha\u2019 by wearing yellow robes and \u2018Tulasi Mala\u2019 and\u00a0observe celibacy during this period.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0temple staff stay in these hamlets for the entire period,\u00a0indicating the\u00a0presence of a casteless society\u00a0in the past with no hint of untouchability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Facts about Chenchu Tribes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They live in the\u00a0hills of southern India,\u00a0primarily in the state of\u00a0Andhra Pradesh.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Other Chenchu communities can be found in the states of\u00a0Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Orissa.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Their\u00a0native language (also called Chenchu) belongs to the\u00a0Dravidian language family.\u00a0Many also speak Telugu,\u00a0the language of their Hindu neighbors.<\/li>\n<li>Many Chenchu have been\u00a0forced out of their traditional wandering, food-gathering lives by the growing number of peasant farmers.
