


{"id":20771,"date":"2024-02-22T12:56:17","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T07:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20771"},"modified":"2025-04-06T07:35:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T02:05:38","slug":"pigeon-pea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pigeon-pea\/","title":{"rendered":"Pigeon pea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Pigeonpea<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also called as\u00a0arhar and tur in India.<\/li>\n<li>It is an\u00a0important legume crop and\u00a0protein-rich food which is primarily consumed as dal in India.<\/li>\n<li>It is predominantly a crop of\u00a0tropical areas mainly cultivated in semi arid regions of India.<\/li>\n<li>Climatic conditions\n<ul>\n<li>Rain:\u00a0It\u00a0requires 600-650mm of annual rainfall along with moist conditions for the initial eight weeks and dry conditions during its flowering and pod development phase.<\/li>\n<li>Temperature:\u00a0It can be grown with a temperature ranging from 26<sup>0<\/sup>C to 30<sup>0<\/sup>C in the rainy season and 17<sup>0<\/sup>C to 22<sup>0<\/sup>C in the post rainy (November to March) season.<\/li>\n<li>Soil:\u00a0It can be grown on all types of soil, however,\u00a0sandy loam or loam soil is most suitable for its cultivation.<\/li>\n<li>It is very\u00a0sensitive to low radiation at pod development, therefore flowering during the monsoon and cloudy weather, leads to poor pod formation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0commonly intercropped with a wide range of crops. In India, it was estimated that 80 &#8211; 90 % of the pigeonpea were intercropped.<\/li>\n<li>The important diseases of Pigeon pea are Wilt, Sterility mosaic disease, Phytophthora blight, Alternaria blight and Powdery mildew etc.<\/li>\n<li>Concern: The Pigeonpea\u2019s long growth cycle and\u00a0sensitivity to day length have hindered breeding efforts, with only about 250 varieties released globally over six decades.<\/li>\n<li>Health benefits: It has\u00a0low glycaemic index and is rich in thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, vitamin A, calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium and phosphorus.<\/li>\n<li>Major Pigeon pea producing states:\u00a0Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>New protocols of ICRISAT<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The new convention promises to substantially cut the time required to develop new Pigeonpea lines with desirable traits, effectively bringing food to dryland communities faster.<\/li>\n<li>The new protocol\u00a0shortens the breeding and control over factors like photoperiod, temperature, humidity, and breeding\u00a0cycle to 2 to 4 years while the traditional Pigeonpea breeding takes up to 13 years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the glycaemic index (GI)?<\/h3>\n<p>The glycaemic index (GI) is a rating system for foods containing carbohydrates.
