


{"id":20812,"date":"2024-02-23T08:05:59","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T02:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20812"},"modified":"2025-04-06T07:51:23","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T02:21:23","slug":"singhbhum-craton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/singhbhum-craton\/","title":{"rendered":"Singhbhum Craton"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Singhbhum Craton<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a vast swathe of rocky land that stretches mainly across parts of\u00a0Jharkhand and Odisha, between the\u00a0Chhota Nagpur plateau and the Eastern Ghats.<\/li>\n<li>This ancient part of the Earth\u2019s crust has been found in previous research to date back to\u00a03.5 billion years ago.<\/li>\n<li>The craton\u2019s oldest rock assemblages are largely\u00a0volcanic and sedimentary rocks also known as\u00a0greenstone successions.<\/li>\n<li>Greenstones are rock assemblages made up mostly of sub-marine volcanic rocks with minor sedimentary rocks.<\/li>\n<li>The geology of this area shares stark similarity with the greenstone belts documented in\u00a0South Africa\u2019s Barberton and Nondweni areas and the\u00a0Pilbara Craton in\u00a0western Australia.<\/li>\n<li>All these areas experienced widespread\u00a0submarine mafic \u2014 meaning high in magnesium oxide \u2014 volcanic eruptions between 3.5 and 3.3 billion years ago, preserved as pillowed lava and komatiites.<\/li>\n<li>Significance\n<ul>\n<li>They offer a clearer picture of\u00a0Earth\u2019s early tectonic activities during the Archaean times, contributing to our understanding of the planet\u2019s formative years.<\/li>\n<li>The Singhbhum Craton\u2019s\u00a0unique geological features, including its greenstone belts, provide invaluable information about Earth\u2019s surface and atmospheric processes.<\/li>\n<li>This is crucial for hypothesising early habitable conditions and the emergence of life on Earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Cratons?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Cratons are the\u00a0oldest and most stable parts of the\u00a0Earth&#8217;s crust, acting as the bedrock of continents.<\/li>\n<li>These are pieces of ancient continents that formed billions of years ago.<\/li>\n<li>Studying them offers a window into how processes within and on the surface of Earth operated in the past.<\/li>\n<li>They host a variety of different groups of rocks, including greenstones and granites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Geology?<\/h3>\n<p>Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, and the processes acting upon them.
