{"id":20824,"date":"2024-02-23T02:15:45","date_gmt":"2024-02-22T20:45:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20824"},"modified":"2025-04-06T07:56:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T02:26:09","slug":"rani-chennamma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rani-chennamma\/","title":{"rendered":"Rani Chennamma"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Rani Chennamma<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Chennamma was born\u00a0in Kakati, a small village in today\u2019s\u00a0Belagavi district of Karnataka.<\/li>\n<li>She became queen of Kitturu (now in Karnataka) when she married\u00a0Raja Mallasarja of the Desai family.<\/li>\n<li>After Mallasarja\u2019s death in 1816, his eldest son,\u00a0Shivalingarudra Sarja, ascended the throne.<\/li>\n<li>Before his death in 1824, Shivalingarudra adopted a child, Shivalingappa, as the successor.<\/li>\n<li>However, the British East India Company refused to recognise Shivalingappa as the successor of the kingdom\u00a0under the \u2018doctrine of lapse\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Key facts about the Kittur Rebellion\n<ul>\n<li>John Thackery, the British official at Dharwad, launched an attack on Kittur in October\u00a01824.<\/li>\n<li>In this first battle British forces lost heavily and the Collector and political agent, St. John Thackeray was killed by the Kitturu forces.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Two British officers,\u00a0Sir Walter Elliot and Mr. Stevenson, were also taken as hostages.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>However, the British army again attacked the Kittur Fort and captured it.<\/li>\n<li>Rani Chennamma and her family were imprisoned and jailed at the fort in Bailhongal, where\u00a0she died in 1829.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What was the doctrine of Lapse?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the doctrine of Lapse, any\u00a0princely state without a natural heir would collapse and would be\u00a0annexed by the Company.<\/li>\n<li>The princely state of Kitturu was taken over by the British\u00a0East India Company in 1824 by imposing the &#8216;doctrine of lapse&#8217;, even before it was officially articulated by Lord Dalhousie, Governor General for the British East India Company, between 1848 and 1856.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the East India Company ?<\/h3>\n<p>It was an English, and later British, joint-stock company founded in 1600 and dissolved in 1874.
