{"id":20840,"date":"2024-02-24T04:59:02","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T23:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20840"},"modified":"2025-04-06T08:02:26","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T02:32:26","slug":"purple-frog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/purple-frog\/","title":{"rendered":"Purple Frog"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Purple Frog<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also known as\u00a0Maveli frog or Pignose Frog.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is believed to have co-existed with dinosaurs, has similarities to the Sooglossidae family of frogs in Seychelles.<\/li>\n<li>It is often called a \u2018living fossil\u2019 which belongs to the\u00a0Nasikabatrachidae family.<\/li>\n<li>Appearance\n<ul>\n<li>It has a bloated body with short stout limbs and is dark purple to greyish in colour.<\/li>\n<li>It has\u00a0a small head in comparison to the body length, and an unusually pointed snout.<\/li>\n<li>Its short and muscular forelimbs with hard palms help it to burrow underground.<\/li>\n<li>Unlike other frogs, it has\u00a0very short hind legs, which does not allow it to leap from one spot to another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Habitat:\u00a0This burrow-dwelling frog prefers loose, damp and well-aerated soil close to ponds and ditches or streams.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Distribution: It is the soil-dwelling frog endemic to selected habitats in the\u00a0Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Anamalai hill is one of its prime habitats in Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\n<li>Tamil Nadu is home to two types of Purple Frog:\u00a0Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis and Nasikabatrachus bhupathi.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0remains underground most of the year except for 2-3 weeks during the monsoon when it comes out to mate.<\/li>\n<li>Conservation status\n<ul>\n<li>IUCN: Endangered<\/li>\n<li>Wildlife Protection (Amendment) Act, 2022: Schedule I<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Threats:\u00a0Habitat loss, road networks through their habitats, and climate change are some of the major threats to their survival.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Amphibians?<\/h3>\n<p>These are a class of cold-blooded vertebrates made up of frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians (wormlike animals with poorly developed eyes). All amphibians spend part of their lives in water and part on land.
