{"id":20909,"date":"2024-02-26T06:37:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T01:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=20909"},"modified":"2025-04-06T08:29:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T02:59:05","slug":"edwards-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/edwards-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Edwards syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Edwards syndrome\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also known\u00a0as trisomy 18.<\/li>\n<li>It is an\u00a0autosomal chromosomal disorder due to an\u00a0extra copy of chromosome 18.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a very\u00a0severe genetic condition that affects child\u2019s body development and growth.<\/li>\n<li>Symptoms: Children diagnosed with trisomy 18 have a low birth weight, multiple birth defects and defining physical characteristics.<\/li>\n<li>There are\u00a0three types of Edwards syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Complete trisomy 18:\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0most common form (94%).<\/li>\n<li>In this type, every cell contains three\u00a0complete copies of chromosome 18.<\/li>\n<li>The extra chromosome is\u00a0most often of maternal origin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mosaic trisomy 18:\n<ul>\n<li>It is the second most common type (less than 5%).<\/li>\n<li>In this type, both a complete trisomy 18 and a normal cell line exist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Partial trisomy 18:\n<ul>\n<li>In this type, only a partial segment of chromosome 18 is present in triplicate.<\/li>\n<li>The partial triplicate often results from a balanced translocation or inversion carried by one of the parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Treatment: There are no specific treatments for trisomy 18. Treatment will focus on the symptoms of the condition, such as heart conditions, breathing difficulties and infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Chromosome?<\/h3>\n<p>Chromosomes are threadlike structures made of protein and a single molecule of DNA that serve to carry the genomic information from cell to cell.
