Some of the main countries include\u00a0India, China, Indonesia,\u00a0Pakistan, Nigeria, Philippines, Turkey, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Korea.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0established prior to the 2003 Cancun ministerial conference that have\u00a0coordinated during\u00a0the Doha Round of World Trade Organization\u00a0(WTO) negotiations, specifically in regard to agriculture.<\/li>\n<li>Dominated by India, the group\u00a0has &#8220;defensive&#8221; concerns regarding agriculture in relation to WTO negotiations, and\u00a0seeks to limit the degree of market opening required of developing countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The group has\u00a0advocated the creation of a &#8220;special products&#8221; exemption, which would\u00a0allow developing countries to exempt certain products from tariff exemptions, and\u00a0also a &#8220;special safeguard mechanism&#8221; which would permit tariff increases in response to import surges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key Facts about World Trade Organization (WTO)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Created in 1995, it is an international institution that\u00a0oversees the rules for global trade among nations.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0superseded the 1947\u00a0General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), created in the wake of World War II.<\/li>\n<li>It is the\u00a0only global international organization\u00a0dealing with the rules of\u00a0trade between nations.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0primary purpose of the WTO is to\u00a0open trade for the benefit of all.<\/li>\n<li>The WTO\u00a0has many roles: it operates a\u00a0global system of trade rules, it acts as a\u00a0forum for negotiating trade agreements, it\u00a0settles trade disputes between its members and it\u00a0supports the needs of developing countries.<\/li>\n<li>Structure:\n<ul>\n<li>The WTO\u2019s top-level decision-making body is the Ministerial Conference, which usually\u00a0meets every two years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Below this is the General Council (normally ambassadors and heads of delegation in Geneva, and sometimes officials sent from members\u2019 capitals), which meets several times a year in the Geneva headquarters.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0General Council\u00a0also meets as the Trade Policy Review Body and the Dispute Settlement Body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>At its heart are the\u00a0WTO agreements,\u00a0negotiated and signed\u00a0by the bulk of the world\u2019s\u00a0trading nations and ratified in their parliaments.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the special safeguard mechanism under WTO?<\/h3>\n<p>WTO\u2019s Special Safeguard Mechanism (SSM) is a protection measure allowed for developing countries to take contingency restrictions against agricultural imports that are causing injuries to domestic farmers. The contingency measure is imposition of tariff if the import surge causes welfare loss to the domestic poor farmers.
