


{"id":21022,"date":"2024-02-28T06:28:38","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T00:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21022"},"modified":"2025-04-06T09:16:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T03:46:18","slug":"gd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gd\/","title":{"rendered":"What is General Diary (GD)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About General Diary (GD)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>General Diary, also called\u00a0Station Diary or\u00a0Daily Diary in some States, is\u00a0maintained under the provisions of\u00a0Section 44 of the Police Act, 1861, in the States to which it applies,\u00a0or under the respective provisions of the Police Act(s) applicable to a State\u00a0or\u00a0under the Police Manual of a State, as the case may be.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Section 44 of the Police Act, 1861\u00a0states that it shall be the duty of every officer\u00a0in charge\u00a0of a police station to keep a general diary in such form as shall, from time to time, be prescribed by the State Government and to\u00a0record therein all complaints and charges preferred, the\u00a0names of all persons arrested, the\u00a0names of the complainants, the\u00a0offences charged against them, the\u00a0weapons or property that shall have been taken from their possession or otherwise, and the\u00a0names of the witnesses who shall have been examined.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is a\u00a0record of all important transactions\/events\u00a0taking place in a police station, including the departure and arrival of police staff, the handing over or taking over of charges, arrest of a person, details of law-and-order duties, the visit of senior officers, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, the GD\u00a0summarizes each First Information Report (FIR)\u00a0registered at the police station, as FIR registration is a significant event there.<\/li>\n<li>Simultaneously, the\u00a0GD entry reference is noted in the FIR Book, while the\u00a0FIR number is mentioned in the GD entry. This parallel documentation ensures that both records are kept up to date.<\/li>\n<li>The GD is\u00a0maintained in chronological order, with a\u00a0new entry starting with number 1 each day.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is a First Information Report (FIR)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0written document prepared by a Police\u00a0officer\u00a0based on information given by an aggrieved person or any other person, either\u00a0in writing or made orally,\u00a0about the\u00a0commission of a Cognizable Offence.<\/li>\n<li>The investigation is started only after the filing of the FIR.<\/li>\n<li>Who can lodge an FIR?\n<ul>\n<li>Anyone who knows about the commission of a cognizable offence can file an FIR. It is not necessary that only the victim of the crime should file an FIR.<\/li>\n<li>A police officer who comes to know about a cognizable offence can file an FIR himself\/herself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>An FIR\u00a0can only be lodged in cases of cognizable offences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>General Diary (GD) vs. First Information Report (FIR)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A copy of each FIR is\u00a0sent to the superior officers\u00a0and to the concerned\u00a0Judicial Magistrate.<\/li>\n<li>A copy of GD is\u00a0not sent to the Judicial Magistrate, though its\u00a0copy is sent to a superior police officer.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0Magistrate of the district shall be\u00a0at liberty to call for any inspection of such GD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0signature of the complainant is\u00a0obtained in the FIR Book as and when the complaint is given to the police station. On the other hand, there is\u00a0no such requirement of obtaining signature of\u00a0the complainant in the general diary.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0general diary is an internal police record, while in\u00a0the case of F.I.R., a copy of these will be\u00a0provided to the complainant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Cognizable Offence?<\/h3>\n<p>A Cognizable offense or case is defined as the one which an officer in-charge of a police station may investigate without the order of a magistrate and effect arrest without warrant.
