


{"id":21164,"date":"2024-12-08T06:49:44","date_gmt":"2024-12-08T01:19:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21164"},"modified":"2025-04-06T10:18:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T04:48:09","slug":"iea-upsc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/iea-upsc\/","title":{"rendered":"International Energy Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About International Energy Agency (IEA):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an autonomous <strong>intergovernmental organisation within the OECD framework<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It works with governments and industry to shape a secure and <strong>sustainable energy future for all.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The IEA was <strong>established in 1974, in the wake of the 1973-1974 oil crisis<\/strong>, to help its members respond to major oil supply disruptions, a role it continues to fulfill today.<\/li>\n<li>IEA\u2019s mandate has expanded over time to include <strong>tracking and analyzing global key energy trends, promoting sound energy policy<\/strong>, and fostering multinational energy technology cooperation.<\/li>\n<li>The IEA has <strong>four main areas<\/strong> of focus: <strong>energy security, economic development, environmental awareness, and engagement worldwide<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It consists of <strong>31 member countries<\/strong> and eleven association countries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A candidate country<\/strong> to the IEA <strong>must be a member country of<\/strong> the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (<strong>OECD<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>Criteria for membership:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Crude oil<\/strong> and\/or product reserves are <strong>equivalent to 90 daysof the previous year\u2019s net imports,<\/strong> to which the government has immediate access (even if it does not own them directly) and could be used to address disruptions to global oil supply.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>demand restraint programmeto reduce national oil consumption<\/strong> by up to 10%.<\/li>\n<li>Legislation and organisation to operate <strong>the Co-ordinated Emergency Response Measures (CERM)<\/strong> on a national basis.<\/li>\n<li>Legislation and measures to ensure that all oil companies under its jurisdiction report information upon request.<\/li>\n<li>Measures are in place to ensure the capability of contributing its share of an IEA collective action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> joined this organization in 2017 as an <strong>Associate member.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The IEA periodically <strong>conducts extensive analysis of member countries\u2019 energy policies.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Reports published<\/strong> by IEA: <strong>World Energy Outlook, World Energy Balances,<\/strong> Energy Technology Perspectives, <strong>World Energy Statistics and Net Zero by 2050.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is OECD?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an international organisation of 38 countries committed to democracy and the market economy. OECD members are typically democratic countries that support free-market economies. The OECD was established on Dec. 14, 1960, by 18 European nations, plus the United States and Canada.
