{"id":21240,"date":"2024-03-05T01:19:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T19:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21240"},"modified":"2025-04-06T10:49:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T05:19:02","slug":"project-seabird","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/project-seabird\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Project Seabird?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Project Seabird<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0largest naval infrastructure project for India, it involves\u00a0creation of a naval base at\u00a0Karwar, Karnataka, on the\u00a0west coast of India.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>History:\n<ul>\n<li>In the\u00a0post-Indo-Pak War of 1971 scenario,\u00a0India learned that the Indian Navy\u00a0needs an additional naval base since Mumbai Harbour faced congestion, which led to security issues for its Western Fleet.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The project was originally conceived by Admiral OS Dawson, the Chief of Naval Staff, in the early 1980s.<\/li>\n<li>It was\u00a0initially sanctioned in 1985, and the foundation stone was laid on October 24, 1986, by Rajiv Gandhi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This is a massive project\u00a0spread over around 11,000 acres of land. With the\u00a0first sealift facility in the country and a\u00a0transfer system for docking and undocking ships and submarines.<\/li>\n<li>Its\u00a0first phase, which included the construction of a\u00a0deep-sea harbour,\u00a0breakwaters dredging, a township, a naval hospital, a\u00a0dockyard uplift centre and a\u00a0ship lift, was\u00a0commissioned in 2005.<\/li>\n<li>The development of\u00a0phase 2\u00a0of INS Kadamba\u00a0commenced in 2011.\n<ul>\n<li>This phase is further\u00a0divided into 2A and 2B.\u00a0It was planned to expand the facilities\u00a0to dock additional warships and a\u00a0new Naval Air Station, among other projects.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Once completed, it will be the\u00a0largest naval base in the Eastern Hemisphere.<\/li>\n<li>It will be able to\u00a0accommodate around 32 warships, 23 submarines, and hangers for several aircraft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are submarines?<\/h3>\n<p>A submarine is a vessel, or ship, that can go underwater. Submarines are called subs for short. Militaries and scientists use submarines to travel deep under the ocean. Militaries use submarines to patrol ocean waters and to attack enemy ships during wartime. Military submarines are usually very large. They may carry more than 100 people.
