{"id":21304,"date":"2024-03-07T07:22:40","date_gmt":"2024-03-07T01:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21304"},"modified":"2025-04-06T11:15:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T05:45:09","slug":"rupa-tarakasi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rupa-tarakasi\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Rupa Tarakasi?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Rupa Tarakasi<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the most exquisite\u00a0silver crafts.<\/li>\n<li>This centuries-old, sophisticated craft is practiced in the\u00a0silver city of Cuttack, Odisha.<\/li>\n<li>Origin:\n<ul>\n<li>While the exact origin of the filigree art in Cuttack is not clear, it is known to have existed as far back as the\u00a012th century.<\/li>\n<li>The art form received considerable\u00a0patronage under the Mughals.<\/li>\n<li>Over the years, as Cuttack transitioned through the hands of different rulers, the silver filigree took on a new form with each.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Process:\n<ul>\n<li>In this work of craft,\u00a0silver bricks are\u00a0transformed into thin, fine wires (tara)\u00a0or foils, from which silver filigree is made with all designs (kasi).<\/li>\n<li>While\u00a0different grades of silver are used in the main metal alloy, the craftsmen\u00a0also use other metals like copper, zinc, cadmium, and tin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0artists involved with this filigree work\u00a0are called \u201cRupa Banias\u201d or \u201cRoupyakaras\u201d (in Odia).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>This craftsmanship extends to creating various items, including\u00a0jewellery worn by Odissi dancers,\u00a0decorative artifacts,\u00a0accessories, and religious and\u00a0cultural pieces.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. This is typically used for agricultural products, foodstuffs, wine and spirit drinks, handicrafts and industrial products. The Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 seeks to provide for the registration and better protection of geographical indications relating to goods in India.
