At that time, to attract ordinary people to Krishna bhakti.<\/li>\n<li>The masks can depict gods, goddesses, demons, animals and birds \u2014 Ravana, Garuda, Narasimha, Hanuman, Varaha Surpanakha all feature among the masks.<\/li>\n<li>They can range in size from those covering just the face (mukh mukha), to those covering the whole head and body of the performer (cho mukha).<\/li>\n<li>Material used:\u00a0The masks are made of\u00a0bamboo, clay, dung, cloth, cotton, wood and other materials available in the riverine surroundings of their makers<\/li>\n<li>Traditional practitioners are working to take the art out of their\u00a0traditional place in sattras, or monasteries, and give them a new, contemporary life.\n<ul>\n<li>Sattras are monastic institutions established by Srimanta Sankardev and his disciples as centres of religious, social and cultural reform.<\/li>\n<li>Majuli has 22 sattras, and the patent application states that the mask-making tradition is by and large concentrated in four of them \u2014\u00a0Samaguri Sattra, Natun Samaguri Sattra, Bihimpur Sattra and Alengi Narasimha Sattra.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Key facts about Majuli manuscript painting<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a form of painting \u2014 also originating in the\u00a016th century \u2014 done on\u00a0sanchi pat, or manuscripts made of the bark of the\u00a0sanchi or agar tree, using homemade ink.<\/li>\n<li>The earliest example of an illustrated manuscript is said to be a rendering of the Adya Dasama of the Bhagwat Purana in Assamese by Srimanta Sankardev.<\/li>\n<li>This art was\u00a0patronised by\u00a0the Ahom kings.
