{"id":21343,"date":"2024-03-08T07:51:24","date_gmt":"2024-03-08T02:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21343"},"modified":"2025-04-06T11:35:50","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T06:05:50","slug":"dolutegravir-dtg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/dolutegravir-dtg\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Dolutegravir (DTG)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Dolutegravir (DTG)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0antiviral drug\u00a0used with other medications\u00a0to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection,\u00a0the virus\u00a0that\u00a0can cause the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome\u00a0(AIDS).<\/li>\n<li>Dolutegravir is in a class of medications called HIV integrase inhibitors.<\/li>\n<li>It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in your blood and\u00a0increasing the number of immune cells that help fight infections in your body.<\/li>\n<li>Although dolutegravir\u00a0does not cure HIV, using it along with other medications may decrease your chance of developing AIDS\u00a0and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2018, WHO has\u00a0recommended the use of dolutegravir as the preferred first- and second-line HIV treatment\u00a0for all population groups.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0more effective,\u00a0easier to take, and\u00a0has fewer side effects than other drugs currently in use.<\/li>\n<li>Common side effects of dolutegravir\u00a0may include:\n<ul>\n<li>headache;<\/li>\n<li>tiredness; or<\/li>\n<li>sleep problems (insomnia).<\/li>\n<li>Some side effects can be serious. These include\u00a0severe skin rashes and allergic reactions,\u00a0liver problems, and drug interactions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is HIV\/AIDS?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>AIDS is a\u00a0chronic,\u00a0potentially life-threatening condition caused by HIV.<\/li>\n<li>HIV\u00a0attacks the body\u2019s immune system, making a person more vulnerable to other infections and diseases.<\/li>\n<li>If HIV is not treated, it\u00a0can lead to AIDS.<\/li>\n<li>Transmission:\n<ul>\n<li>It is a\u00a0sexually transmitted infection (STI).<\/li>\n<li>It can also be spread by\u00a0contact with infected blood, and from illicit injection drug use, or by sharing needles.<\/li>\n<li>It can also be\u00a0spread from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or\u00a0breastfeeding.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Treatment:\n<ul>\n<li>There is\u00a0currently no effective cure. Once people get HIV, they have it for life.<\/li>\n<li>But\u00a0with proper medical care,\u00a0HIV can be controlled. People with HIV who get effective\u00a0HIV treatment (called\u00a0antiretroviral therapy, or ART) can live long, healthy lives and protect their partners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Virus?<\/h3>\n<p>A virus is an infectious microbe consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat. A virus cannot replicate alone; instead, it must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of itself. Often, a virus ends up killing the host cell in the process, causing damage to the host organism.
