


{"id":21435,"date":"2024-03-12T12:15:29","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T06:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21435"},"modified":"2025-04-06T12:12:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T06:42:56","slug":"anthropocene-epoch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/anthropocene-epoch\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Anthropocene Epoch?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Anthropocene Epoch<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an\u00a0unofficial unit of geologic time, used to describe the most\u00a0recent period in Earth\u2019s history\u00a0when human activity started to have a significant\u00a0impact on the planet\u2019s climate and ecosystems.<\/li>\n<li>The word Anthropocene is derived from the Greek words anthropo, for \u201cman,\u201d and cene, for \u201cnew,\u201d coined and made popular by biologist Eugene Stormer and chemist Paul Crutzen in 2000.<\/li>\n<li>There are numerous phenomena associated with this proposed epoch, such as global warming, sea-level rise, ocean acidification, mass-scale\u00a0soil erosion, the advent of deadly heat waves,\u00a0deterioration of the biosphere, and other\u00a0detrimental changes in the environment.<\/li>\n<li>What is the Geological Time Scale?\n<ul>\n<li>Earth\u2019s history is\u00a0divided into a hierarchical series of smaller\u00a0chunks of time, referred to as the geologic time scale.<\/li>\n<li>These divisions,\u00a0in descending length of time, are\u00a0called eons, eras, periods, epochs, and ages.<\/li>\n<li>These units are\u00a0classified based on Earth\u2019s rock layers, or strata,\u00a0and the fossils found\u00a0within them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>From examining these fossils,\u00a0scientists know that\u00a0certain organisms are characteristic of certain parts of the\u00a0geologic record. The study of this correlation is called\u00a0stratigraphy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Current Epoch: Officially, the current epoch is called the\u00a0Holocene, which\u00a0began 11,700 years ago after the last major ice age.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Debate:\n<ul>\n<li>Scientists still debate\u00a0whether the Anthropocene is different from the Holocene.<\/li>\n<li>The term\u00a0Anthropocene has not been formally adopted by the International Union of Geological Sciences\u00a0(IUGS),\u00a0the international organization that names and defines epochs.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0primary question that the IUGS needs to answer before declaring the Anthropocene an epoch\u00a0is if humans have changed the Earth system\u00a0to the point that it is reflected in the rock strata.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS)?<\/h3>\n<p>The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), founded in 1961, is one of the World\u2019s largest scientific organizations. It encourages international cooperation and participation in the earth sciences in relation to human welfare and is a member of the International Council for Science (ICSU). Membership is open to countries or defined regions.
