


{"id":21443,"date":"2024-03-12T01:49:49","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T20:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21443"},"modified":"2025-04-06T12:16:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T06:46:14","slug":"citizenship-amendment-act-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/citizenship-amendment-act-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)\u00a0amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to\u00a0provide a path to Indian citizenship for Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis\u00a0who\u00a0migrated from\u00a0neighbouring\u00a0Muslim-majority countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan,\u00a0before December 31, 2014.<\/li>\n<li>Under the CAA,\u00a0migrants who entered India till December 31, 2014,\u00a0and had\u00a0suffered \u201creligious persecution or fear or religious persecution\u201d in their country of their origin\u00a0would be made eligible for accelerated citizenship.<\/li>\n<li>It\u00a0relaxed the residence requirement for\u00a0naturalisation\u00a0of these migrants\u00a0from twelve years to just six.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0cut-off date for citizenship\u00a0is December 31, 2014, which means the applicant should have entered India on or before that date.<\/li>\n<li>The law\u00a0exempts the tribal areas\u00a0of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura as\u00a0included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, including the tribal areas of Karbi Anglong in Assam, Garo Hills in Meghalaya, Chakma district in Mizoram, and Tribal areas district in Tripura.<\/li>\n<li>It also includes a\u00a0provision for the cancellation of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)\u00a0registration if the OCI cardholder violates any provision of the Citizenship Act or any other applicable law.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Overseas Citizen of India (OCI)?<\/h3>\n<p>The OCI Scheme was introduced by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955, in August 2005. Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) of certain categories as specified in the Citizenship Act, 1955 are eligible for being OCI cardholders.
