{"id":21675,"date":"2024-03-19T06:54:14","date_gmt":"2024-03-19T01:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21675"},"modified":"2025-04-06T13:50:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T08:20:38","slug":"icecube-neutrino-observatory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/icecube-neutrino-observatory\/","title":{"rendered":"IceCube Neutrino Observatory"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About IceCube Neutrino Observatory<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a device at the\u00a0earth\u2019s South Pole that detects subatomic particles\u00a0called neutrinos.<\/li>\n<li>It was built and is maintained by the IceCube Collaboration, which consists of many universities worldwide led by the University of Wisconsin, Madison.<\/li>\n<li>It consists of\u00a0thousands of sensors buried more than 1.4 km beneath the ice plus multiple detectors above the surface.<\/li>\n<li>IceCube is the world\u2019s\u00a0biggest \u2018neutrino telescope\u2019; its sensors are distributed throughout a cubic kilometre of ice.<\/li>\n<li>Working\n<ul>\n<li>When a neutrino interacts with the ice surrounding the sensors, it may produce some charged particles and some radiation.<\/li>\n<li>The sensors detect the radiation to infer the detection of a neutrino and use the radiation\u2019s properties to understand more about the particle.<\/li>\n<li>Neutrinos come in different types. IceCube can identify some of them in real-time.<\/li>\n<li>For others, IceCube collects data for many years and scientists then comb through them to find neutrino interaction events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are\u00a0Neutrinos?<\/h3>\n<p>Neutrinos are mysterious particles, produced copiously in nuclear reactions in the Sun, stars, and elsewhere.
