


{"id":21699,"date":"2024-03-20T12:21:02","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T06:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=21699"},"modified":"2025-04-06T14:00:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-06T08:30:28","slug":"european-unions-artificial-intelligence-act","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/european-unions-artificial-intelligence-act\/","title":{"rendered":"What is European Union\u2019s Artificial Intelligence Act?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About European Union\u2019s Artificial Intelligence Act<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>world\u2019s first comprehensive Artificial Intelligence law.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It lays down <strong>rules and guidelines for specific risks<\/strong> associated <strong>with the use of AI<\/strong> in areas like biometric authentication, facial recognition, high-risk domains such as healthcare, and deep fakes.<\/li>\n<li>Taking a <strong>horizontal, risk-based approach<\/strong> that will apply across sectors of AI development, the <strong>EU AI Act classifies the technology into four categories<\/strong>: <strong>Prohibited, high-risk, limited-risk, and minimal-risk.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Systems that violate<\/strong> or threaten <strong>human rights<\/strong> through, for example, social scoring\u2014creating \u201crisk\u201d profiles of people based on \u201cdesirable\u201d or \u201cundesirable\u201d behaviour \u2014 or mass surveillance <strong>are banned outright.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>High-risk systems<\/strong>, which <strong>have a significant impact on people\u2019s lives and rights<\/strong>, such as those used for biometric identification or in education, health, and law enforcement, <strong>will have to meet strict requirements<\/strong>, including <strong>human oversight and security and conformity assessment<\/strong>, before they can be put on the market.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Systems involving user interaction<\/strong>, <strong>like chatbots<\/strong> and image-generation programmes, are <strong>classified as limited-risk<\/strong> and <strong>are required to inform usersthatthey are interacting with AI<\/strong> and allow them to opt out.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>most widely used systems<\/strong>, <strong>which pose no or negligible risk<\/strong>, such as spam filters and smart appliances, are <strong>categorised as minimal-risk<\/strong>. They will be <strong>exempt from regulation<\/strong>, but will need to comply with existing laws.<\/li>\n<li>The law will <strong>apply to any companies doing business in the European Union<\/strong>, and allows for <strong>penalties of up to 7% of global turnover<\/strong> or \u20ac35 million, whichever is higher, for those that don\u2019t keep their use of AI under control.<\/li>\n<li>The act also <strong>enshrines the right of consumers to make complaints<\/strong> about the inappropriate use of AI by businesses, <strong>and to receive meaningful explanations<\/strong> for decisions taken by an AI that affect their rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?<\/h3>\n<p>Artificial intelligence, or AI, is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities.
